Choosing, Comparing, and Tracking: A Practical Overview

The ABIOC Art & Architecture Library holds ninety books that range from a three-thousand-word sketchbook to a two-hundred-thousand-word historical account. With such variety, the first question is usually not which book is best, but which one fits the time and attention you can give. The library's three tools—Book Finder, Compare Books, and Reading Tracker—address that question from different angles.

Book Finder narrows the catalog by the criteria you care about, whether that is a specific subject or a comfortable reading length. Compare Books then lets you place two or three candidates side by side to see measurable differences. Reading Tracker, finally, helps you turn a chosen title into a realistic daily plan based on pages. Used together, these tools move you from a vague interest to a concrete reading commitment.

Starting with Book Finder

Begin with Book Finder when you have a general sense of what you want but need to see what exists. The catalog's four categories—Architecture, Art History, Painting Sculpture, and Design Photography—are broad, so combining a category with a length or time filter can quickly reduce a long list. For instance, if you are looking for a short visual tour, a book like York: A Sketch-Book — Background and Themes (about 3,500 words) appears under Architecture and would suit a brief sitting.

The finder also lets you choose a preference for chapter rhythm or sentence flow, which can be useful if you know you prefer shorter sections or more direct prose. These descriptive metrics are relative to this catalog, so they help you find a style that matches your reading habit without implying any judgment of quality.

Refining with Compare Books

Once you have two or three finalists, Compare Books shows the numbers that affect your reading experience: word count, estimated reading time, text sections, sentence flow, and chapter rhythm. You might discover that a book with a modest word count is still a long commitment because its sentences are dense, or that a longer book is broken into many small sections that make it easy to pause.

For example, comparing a 4,000-word caricature collection with a 9,000-word artist biography might seem straightforward, but the biography's two text sections mean fewer natural stopping points. The compare tool makes these trade-offs visible before you start.

Planning with Reading Tracker

After you choose a book, Reading Tracker turns the estimated reading time into a page-based plan. Since the catalog does not always provide a fixed page count, the tracker estimates pages from word count assuming 250 words per page. You can override that total with the page count from your own edition or reading app.

Set a daily page goal—the default is 20 pages—and the tracker calculates how many days you need and how much time per day. Progress is saved in your browser, so you can pick up where you left off without an account. The tools do not rate literary quality; they simply help you manage the practical side of reading.
