Each entry includes a detailed editorial page that goes beyond a simple description. We organise these pages by the categories you see throughout the site, such as Exploring Nations, Peoples & the Past and A Guide to Art, Design & Visual Culture. Within each category, you will find thematic groupings like Exploring Wars, Revolutions & Nations and Images Objects Creative Practice Context: Texts & Context, which help you navigate works by subject and era.
How Books Are Organised
Each catalogue entry is built around a specific edition or work. We assign it to one or more of our real categories based on its primary themes. For example, Sweden — A Closer Reading appears under Exploring Nations, Peoples & the Past, while Selected etchings by Piranesi, series 2 — Text and Context belongs to A Guide to Art, Design & Visual Culture. Within a category, entries are arranged to encourage serendipitous discovery — a reader browsing Exploring Wars, Revolutions & Nations might encounter both The artillerist's manual and British soldier's compendium — Themes and Context and Annals of the persecution in Scotland — Background and Themes. This structure reflects our belief that historical works speak to one another across boundaries.
Metadata Review and File Presentation
We review and enrich the metadata for every entry, verifying author, title, publication date, and source details. Where possible, we note the original language and any known translations. Our file links are checked periodically to ensure they remain active. For each work, we indicate the available formats — typically EPUB, PDF, and HTML — and, where enabled, we offer a direct reading view within the browser. If a file is particularly large or contains embedded images, we note that as well.
Contextual Reading Notes
Every catalogue entry includes a set of editorial notes that we call a reading companion. These are not exhaustive scholarly essays but rather concise guides that place the work in its historical and cultural context. For instance, Thomas Nast's Christmas drawings for the human race — Story, Setting & Ideas discusses the artist's influence on modern Christmas imagery, while Bromoil printing and bromoil transfer — A Reader’s Guide explains the technical process for contemporary photographers. Our notes may highlight themes, identify key figures, or point out why a particular edition is significant. We aim to enrich your reading without overwhelming it.
