In offering the following practical dissertation (the first ever yet published) upon the Art of Architectural Modelling, the Author feels that he is supplying a want that must have been long felt by many students and others in the architectural profession. The utility of the “Model,” coupled with its beauty, is ample recommendation of the study; and the modeller will be able to furnish the architect with sure and certain means that he may find weighty difficulties surmounted, especially in the case of uncomprehending clients, by giving to them the designs of their edifices with a distinctness almost equal to the real work when completed. With many clients, even “perspectives” are poorly understood, which seldom fails to cause some slight dissatisfaction on their part when they see too late certain things that the eye would have detected in the model and corrected in the outset. Models are becoming very general, where buildings are subjects of competition; and as this course of procedure and honourable encounter bids fair (when weeded of some of its present objections) to open up a good and honourable system, whereby the “race _may be_ to the swift,” the importance of the following brief and simple Treatise on the subject, becomes doubly clear.

ARCHITECTURAL MODELLING

The art of Architectural Modelling is not so difficult to acquire, as an observer, examining a model and admiring the minuteness of its parts, would be led to suppose. But in order to gain a certain degree of proficiency, a large amount of patience and perseverance is absolutely necessary. The great beauties of a model consist, firstly, in perfect symmetry and correctness of parts, all the angles being clear, well-defined, and sharp, the various minutiæ of detail accurately delineated; and secondly, to the straightness and evenness of the horizontal and perpendicular lines. It will be, therefore, readily understood, that it is these portions of the manipulation which demand the student’s attention, more particularly as the joining of the paper or cardboard by means of a mitre, as well as the cutting of lines on the slant in either a horizontal or curved direction, is somewhat difficult. These difficulties which arise in the student’s path are, however, easily to be overcome, and he must not grow faint-hearted if, after repeated trials, he does not succeed in producing the required effect. Rather at this juncture let him examine some model by an adept in the art, comparing his work with it. By these means he will be enabled to see the points in his own requiring improvement, and then let him continue to labour perseveringly and diligently until he gains a perfect command of his knife and materials, and few will be found but will admit that the result at last obtained fully repays him for his time and labour. There is no doubt that the art is of very great antiquity, and that in former times no building of importance was erected without one having been previously constructed. This not only aided the successful carrying out of the architect’s drawings, but enabled him and his employer to judge better as to the general effect the work would have when completed.

T. A. Richardson’s 1859 manual opens with a confident claim: this is “the first ever yet published” practical dissertation on architectural modelling in paper. The author, an architect himself, addresses fellow professionals and students, arguing that a well-made model can “furnish the architect with sure and certain means” to overcome client misunderstandings—a problem he says even perspectives cannot always solve. The preface frames modelling as both a practical tool for competitions and a remedy for the “slight dissatisfaction” that arises when clients see a finished building too late. Richardson’s tone is direct, occasionally wry, and grounded in workshop experience rather than theory.

Materials and Tools: Precision Over Pomp

Richardson devotes the first two parts of his treatise to materials and instruments, treating them as the foundation of successful modelling. He specifies paper types by thickness and recommends an adhesive that “must be double” for certain joints, avoiding mitres where possible. The cutting board, modelling press, T square, and adjusting straight edge are described with an eye to stability and accuracy. His “adjusting knife compass” is a tool for cutting curves, and he insists on sharp knives: “Cutting in general with the Knife” is a skill to be mastered. The language is technical but never obscure; he assumes the reader has access to a workshop but may lack specialised modelling equipment. Notably, he suggests improvising—a cylinder for bending mica, for instance—showing a pragmatic willingness to adapt.

From Outline Plan to Finished Model: Sequence and Detail

The third part walks through the construction process step by step, from outlining the plan to fixing the model to its stand. Richardson emphasises sequence: the outline plan comes first, then the thickness of walls, then elevation outlines. Window frames are built with “glass or other backing” (mica or thin glass), and doors are formed with mitres or double thickness to avoid visible joins. He introduces “blocking pieces to Angles” for stability and a “Wood Stay” for reinforcement. The cornice is constructed separately and slipped over the shaft—a method he illustrates with a diagram. Throughout, his instructions are precise: “a ledge of cardboard must be left at the back of the blocking” for the roof to rest on. The prose is procedural, but occasional asides—like his digression on chimneys—reveal a personality behind the manual.

The Greenhouse Model: A Case Study in Materials

Richardson uses a greenhouse design to demonstrate modelling techniques for iron-and-glass structures in miniature. He specifies mica for the roof, bent around a cylinder, and cardboard strips for ribs, “coloured any suitable tint.” The description is remarkably detailed: pilasters are gummed to mica on both sides; the cornice is cut with returns; the plinth is moulded and fixed. He notes that a circular roof requires a cylinder, while a flat hipped roof does not—a distinction that shows his attention to structural logic. The greenhouse example also reveals his method of scaling: “Scale ¼ inch one foot.” This section is the most concrete illustration of his principle that the model should give “a distinctness almost equal to the real work when completed.”

Chimneys: Ornament, Error, and the Architect’s Taste

In a striking passage, Richardson calls chimneys “those great ornaments to a house” and laments that modern architects often make them “a glaring error.” He blames “Messrs. Somebody’s patent never-failing revolving smoke preventer” for ruining designs—a “hideous monster” that “whirling and screeching” upon the wind. This digression is the manual’s most personal moment, blending technical instruction with aesthetic critique. He then returns to modelling: chimneys are built with two thicknesses of paper, and cornices are slipped over the shaft. For chimneys on a roof, the base must be cut to match the slope—one angle if below the ridge, two if the ridge cuts into the chimney. The accompanying sketches (referenced but not reproduced in the text) clarify the geometry. Richardson’s tone here is both exasperated and practical, underscoring his belief that modelling serves good design.

Richardson’s manual is best read as a period-specific craft guide, not a general introduction to architectural modelling. Its value lies in the specificity of its methods—the double thicknesses, the mica glazing, the knife techniques—and in the author’s candid opinions on architectural taste. Readers interested in Victorian construction practices or the history of architectural representation will find it a concise primary source. The instructions assume a hands-on reader with access to basic tools; modern modellers may need to adapt materials, but the underlying logic of sequence and joinery remains instructive.

It stayed with me—that old manual on paper modeling. There’s something so honest in its precision, like holding a quiet craft in your hands.
